FRESNO >> The long-awaited showdown involving two of the state’s elite girls cross country programs never materialized Saturday. But that didn’t stop Simi Valley from putting on a show in the championship race at the 35th annual ASICS/Clovis Invitational. Sarah Baxter wasn’t able to improve on her all-time Woodward Park course standard, but the senior was part of a record-setting effort by the Pioneers. Baxter clocked 17 minutes on the 5-kilometer layout, with all seven Simi Valley runners breaking the 19-minute barrier to produce the fastest time in meet history despite not competing against Saugus as originally anticipated. “This tells me we’re doing pretty well,” said Baxter, who set the state record of 16:39.7 at last year’s Division I final.
